The Atacama
Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is an international astronomy facility. ALMA is an equal partnership between Europe and North
America in cooperation with the republic
of Chile, ALMA
is founded in North America by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in
cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and in Europe by
the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and Spain. ALMA
construction and operations are lead on behalf of North America by the National
radio astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is managed by the Associated
Universities, Inc. (AUI) and on behalf of Europe
by ESO.
ALMA will be a single instrument composed of up to 64 high
precision antennas located in the commune of San Pedro de Atacama, II Region, Chile, at 5000
meters above the sea level. Its primary function will be to observe with
unprecedented clarity the enigmatic cold regions of the Universe, which are
optically dark, yet shine brightly in the millimeter portion of the
electromagnetic spectrum.

General Information:
Assignment Debrief: The candidate will administer, support, oversee in:
DB Support:
- Support
MySQL, MSSQL, Frontbase, FoxPro, and Access database servers.
- Maintain
Backups
- Performance
Tuning.
- Understand
table joins and be able to build queries to harvest information for custom
reports.
- Knowledge
in writing Stored Procedures and when to use them.
HTTP:
Support
Apache and IIS servers. Must support Wiki, WelcomHome, and EDM.
Application Support:
Citrix,
OpenPlan Professional, Cobra, Adobe PDF Maker (In a Citrix environment).
Programming:
Proficient in the following: PHP,
Visual Basic, VBScript, javascript and OOP as a whole.
Knowledge in the following is useful:
TCL, Java, .net
Support Remote users and assist with any problem they have in using our
resources.
Support of multiple operating systems and program support.
Requirements for the Position:
- We are seeking for a
professional with a solid and proven knowledge in IT, Communications,
Administration & Support Areas, with at least 5 years of experience in
the field, with no less than two of those under the climatic conditions
like the ones present in the OSF & the AOS. Previous experience in
similar positions will be a plus greatly considered.
- The candidate must have and
prove exceedingly strong abilities and appropriate handling written and
spoken English and Spanish, in conversational, formal and technical terms.
The application must be written on English, and while all interviews will
be held completely on English, it will be required for the candidate to
demonstrate complete command of the Spanish language as well. Non English
applications will not be considered.
- Experience designing,
deploying, administering and supporting Microsoft Active Directory Based
Domains (ADS) will be greatly considered.
- It is essential for all
candidates to pass a High Altitude (5000 mts) medical test and be aware on
the physical requirements involved when working under the conditions
present in places like both the OSF and the AOS
- Give support to users, to
introduce in the handling of the different elements within the office.
- Other desirable skills: Formal
studies in TCP/IP, Networks Security, Networking Infrastructures and ADS
design, deployment and administration.
Duty Station:
The Main
offices of ALMA are located in Santiago, Chile.
Frequent traveling to the OSF, the AOS and/or international
travel will be required as needed.
